Souey’s job jibe

GRAEME SOUNESS is convinced Rafa Benitez would have been sacked by now if he was managing another of the Big Four clubs.
Benitez is under pressure after his side drew 1-1 with Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday - leaving them needing a miracle to reach the last 16.

Former Reds boss Souness said: "If Rafa had been at Arsenal, Man United or Chelsea, he wouldn't still be there because those supporters are not like Liverpool supporters.

"I think Liverpool fans will be a bit more patient and give a manager a bit more time."

Torres op on a knife-edge

FERNANDO TORRES has flown to Spain for more tests on his dodgy groin.
And there are fears the Liverpool striker will need hernia surgery.

Torres, accompanied by club doctor Mark Waller, spent the morning having tests in Liverpool.

Now he will get a second opinion in Valencia, with the prospect of going under the knife an option.

Skipper Steven Gerrard also has a damaged groin and a spokesman said: "Fernando did further tests as part of his rehabilitation.

"He and Steven both continue to make progress."

13 baffling Beni blunders

By PHIL THOMAS

Add a comment (26)
RAFA BENITEZ has made a career of hauling himself - and Liverpool - back from the brink.
There have been epic moments in his Anfield reign when he pulled off masterstrokes that had the Kop believing they were in the presence of greatness.

They stood in awe of Rafa the Legend.

That faith and trust looked mis-placed in Lyon on Wednesday when Liverpool failed to clinch the win they so badly needed in the Champions League.

But it is not all about that single failure.

A closer glance at the facts exposes a few home truths which are painful to contemplate.

The harsh reality suggests the Kop may have been idolising someone who does not quite merit legendary status. Someone more like Rafa the Myth, than Rafa the Legend.

All his touches of genius have to be tempered by 13 BAFFLING DECISIONS which led to more head-scratching than a visit from the nit-nurse.

We all know Spaniard Benitez has a notoriously stubborn streak.

A single-minded approach from which there is rarely any swaying.

But there are times when anyone has to listen to a voice of reason - and that brings us to one of Rafa's most calamitous blunders.

When Paco Ayesteran was working alongside Benitez, he had someone whose opinion was not simply down to blind faith, but what he himself believed in.

Ayesteran - a man who helped establish them as the Spanish Brian Clough and Peter Taylor - left Anfield a little over two years ago.

The reason: A petty disagreement which could so easily have been rectified rather than be an irreparable rift.

Many Reds believe the day Paco headed back to his homeland was the day the cracks began to appear.

A lack of trophies since does little to shatter the suggestion.

Then comes Rafa's bewildering treatment of key players.

Like, for example, the handling of Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane.

And Xabi Alonso, possibly more than anyone else.

Crouch, should anyone forget, hit 22 Premier League goals in his time at Liverpool. In the Euro campaign of three years ago his seven goals did as much as anyone to book another Champions League final.

His reward? A place on the bench for all but the final 12 minutes of a game when Liverpool desperately needed another outlet, a man to unsettle a Milan backline lapping up all thrown at them.

Alongside Crouch on the bench was Craig Bellamy, a man terrorising defences again, now at Manchester City. Both have now gone but Crouch's sale must go down as a monumental error.

Yet if Crouch felt hard done-by, that is nothing compared to the treatment fellow striker Keane received.

A man who would have crawled over broken glass to play for his boyhood heroes, yet would have only used it to slash his wrists by the time he left.

One glaring example of that came at Wigan, at the end of last January, when he sat on the bench as Liverpool toiled. Keane was thrown on only for the last six minutes after the Latics equalised.

Too little, too late.

And talking of hitmen left kicking their heels, even superstar Fernando Torres has not escaped.

Like at Stoke, two weeks earlier, when he was thrown on only for 30 minutes of a deadlocked game.

By then, Stoke's belief grew in equal measure to Liverpool's panic and two more points were eventually dropped.

A game which, incidentally, came 24 hours after the memorable 'Raf rant' - another of his blunders.

Even if you accept Rafa was right to question Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson's influence on the game, the timing could not have been worse - heaping immediate pressure on his men to get a win at Stoke.

Had the Wigan and Stoke games ended in victories, the four extra points would have brought an end to a two-decade title drought.

Then there's the second striker issue. Ryan Babel, David Ngog, Andriy Voronin. Men capable in flashes, yet nowhere near consistent enough.

We saw all that is frustrating about Voronin in Wednesday night's draw in Lyon. OK, Babel scored a cracker that night, but how often have we been able to say that?

Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard both went public in their desire to see Michael Owen brought back - for nothing - in the summer.

Yet Benitez, 49, still harbours simmering anger at the way he believes Owen left Liverpool in the lurch when he joined Real Madrid.

End of interest. Even though he is not the player he once was, does anyone genuinely believe he would not have given the Liverpool side a more potent alternative to those now available? And what of Rafa's suffocatingly cautious approach to the game?

So many defensive line-ups, substitutions, one-player-up-front moments make Rafa's mantra crystal clear: It's far more important not to lose a game, than it is to win it.

Bringing Yossi Benayoun off when his team were level with Lyon only to lose the Champions League home tie, was met by boos from the fans.

Yes, there have been plenty of success stories.

Martin Skrtel, for one, was a man largely unknown on these shores, but a tough, rugged centre-back entirely at home in the Premier League.

So why, at Middlesbrough last term, was he used as a right-back, spending the afternoon being run ragged as Liverpool crashed.

Beyond all of these aberrations, there is one dark shadow that looms larger than any other at Anfield right now.

Xabi Alonso.

Selling Alonso, following his most impressive season at the club, was not in itself the crime, however.

That came the minute the midfielder found himself as a pawn to try and tempt Gareth Barry to Merseyside.

From then on, no counsellor could repair the relationship between the two Spaniards. That was not down to ill fortune, but pure and simple rank bad man-management by Benitez.

Only this week Gerrard admitted he remains "devastated" by the loss of Alonso. And when your best player is saying that, then things really are bad, Rafa.

Thirteen is unlucky for most. For Benitez, it may be the number that exposes the myth behind the legend.

El Nino my story

Penny Lane must have seemed a million miles away from Madrid to the young Spanish schoolboy.

So too, the ‘Yellow Submarine’ that Fernando Torres sang about with his brother as they recited Beatles hits passed down from their father Jose.

Indeed, ‘El Nino’, would not even have known who the Fab Four were given his tender years or what it was they were singing about. But he loved their tunes all the same. And that was all that mattered.

Had anyone told him just how intricately linked he would ultimately become with Liverpool’s most famous sons and he would have laughed it off as madness. Liverpool? He’d never even heard of it. Yet the city was to become his second home. His future. The platform for his footballing dreams and the Beatles back catalogue was to become his Bible.

Liverpool owner Tom Hicks promises Rafa Benitez transfer funds

Tom Hicks, the owner of English soccer club Liverpool, has promised that some of the income from the club's world record shirt sponsorship deal will be given to coach Rafa Benitez to use in the transfer market.Hicks and his co-owner, George Gillett, have received some criticism from the club's fans over the level of their investment, but Hicks insists the club will continue to spend as it seeks to capture the English title for the first time in nearly two decades."Knowing Rafa Benitez I suspect he's got his eye on part of it," said Hicks. "As we build our revenues it gives ability to be more competitive on the pitch and, this is a very important one, but we think we have other opportunities in the future as well."Everybody involved with Liverpool wants to win the Premier League, it's been too many years and it's our goal."Hicks also spoke about the improved relationships between himself, Gillett and Benitez. "Everything is very stable. I think the management situation at the club has dramatically improved," said Hicks. "There is a real sense of optimism."

Liverpool: Standard Chartered explain backing of club with ‘huge following’

Standard Chartered, the bank that has signed a world record sponsorship deal with English soccer club Liverpool, has moved to explain the reasoning behind its move into soccer.
The bank will pay Liverpool more than US$130 million over the next four years as it seeks to increase its business. Its sponsorship of Liverpool, who have been English champions 18 times and European champions five times, is tailored not at either of those regions, but at Asia.
"From a Standard Chartered perspective, Asia is our home," senior group brand manager Nicola Apostolis told Asia Sponsorship News. "We opened our first branches in 1858 in Shanghai and Mumbai; and in Hong Kong and Singapore in 1859. Today, 80 per cent of our business is done in Asia.
"The Liverpool sponsorship is a perfect match in terms of geographic footprint, as the club has a huge following in many of our markets, particularly across Asia."
Liverpool claim to have 58 million fans in China, the country identified by many analysts as the nexy key market for the English Premier League. Asia Sponsorship News quotes a study reporting that 90 per cent of Asian sports fans identified the Premier League as the sports competition they follow most closely.
The bank has confirmed it will sell Liverpool shirts in its Asian branches, providing another revenue stream for the club.

Include Healthier Food Options to Lose Weight

It's fairly easy to follow a printed diet sheet that offers no or little selection of the foods you're allowed to eat, regardless of your own personal tastes and preferences. But what happens once you reach your target goal? After you've reached your target weight, don't you get bored eating the same foods day in and day out? Wouldn't it make better sense to just make better and healthier food choices allowing to a wide selection of foods, so you don't bore yourself to death with your diet. Here are a few things to consider when trying to include healthier food options to maintain your weight loss or to even lose more weight.
1) ADD HEALTHY VARIETY TO YOUR DIET You can eat a healthy, nutritious meal with a wide variety of different food options and combinations. You don't have to stick with one meal plan. It's a good idea to choose different naturally lower fat options in the various food groups to gain the different spectrum of nutrients typically found in each. For example, pork has more vitamin B than chicken, while beef typically contains more iron the fish. Some fruits have more vitamin C or E than others. So choosing from a wide selection of foods will ensure your getting the most nutrition from every meal.
2) ENSURE BALANCE IN YOUR MEALS Eating the same meal day in and day out might mean you're getting more of one particular substance, vitamin, or nutrient over another. Over time this may throw the body out of equilibrium and create problems if nutritional deficiencies. Plus, you're body will tell you because it is typically more satisfying to have a meal filled with a combination of meat, vegetable, fruit, grains, etc. If you ensure balance in your diet you'll stay satisfied longer. This will mean less binges (because your body is craving some type of nutrients it isn't getting) and more weight loss.
3) KEEP IT IN MODERATION Eat smaller more frequent meals to keep you satisfied longer. Doing this will stabilize your blood sugar levels and keep you from hunger induced binges. Aim for a least 5-6 smaller meals a day. This will keep your metabolism firing as well.
4) LEAN ON THESE SNACK IDEAS 5-6 meals a day will require some healthy snacks between meals. So instead of leaning on the high fat potato chips, try one of these snack ideas to curb your appetite: air popped popcorn, baked tortilla chips, baked pita wedges, cheerios, rice cakes, saltines, or zwieback crackers.
By learning to add variety, balance, moderation, and healthy snacking to your diet, you can ensure that you keep hunger induced binges to a minimum and lose weight while still eating healthy and nutritious food.

Swine Flu Facts

Swine influenza – Swine influenza or swine flu is a respiratory disease in pigs caused by the type A H1N1 swine influenza virus (SIV). Humans in close proximity to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans.Symptoms – Swine flu symptoms in humans are generally similar to regular flu (influenza) symptoms and include muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, lack of appetite, fever, chills, and general weakness and discomfort. Other reported symptoms are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.Transmission – Swine flu spreads from pigs to humans when humans are close to infected pigs. People working in barns or visiting livestock exhibits housing infected pigs are likely to get affected. Transmission from humans to humans can occur when the infected individual coughs or sneezes when others are close by. Putting one’s hands to the nose or mouth after touching anything with the flu viruses on it could also spread the infection. Consuming well-cooked pork and pork products won’t cause infection as cooking to an internal temperature of 160°F kills bacteria and viruses, including the swine flu virus.Treatment and medication – While swine flu can generally be cured by the four antiviral drugs approved for curing flu in the US, amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir, the recent 2009 swine flu outbreak viruses have been found to be resistant to the first two drugs. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are now recommended for treatment and prevention of swine influenza.Prevention – Swine flu can be prevented by taking certain precautionary measures, such as washing hands frequently with soap or an alcohol-based hand wash. Staying away from infected individuals is important as their coughing or sneezing could spread the infection. If instances of infection are reported in your locality, stay indoors as far as possible. Swine flue vaccine could be out by June 2009.

What is Swine Flu?

Swine flu or swine influenza is a disease common in swine, with normal flu-like symptoms, but caused by any strain of the swine influenza virus (SIV - virus endemic in pigs). Though rare in humans, individuals with greater exposure to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the particular rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans. Even then, it is a rare occurrence for the strain to be able to pass from human to human. This could occur if the SIV is able to mutate into a form that can be easily transmitted among humans. The swine flu outbreak of 2009 is believed to be caused by such a mutated strain of the SIV. The current outbreak is called swine flu only because one of the surface proteins of the tested virus is similar to the one which infects pigs. It is still unknown if this is currently infecting pigs though it’s clearly spreading among people, leading the World Health Organization to raise the Phase 4 pandemic alert. This new strain responsible for the outbreak has been found to be a re-assortment of strains of the influenza A virus subtype H1N1. These strains are separately endemic in humans and in swine.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) would help in treatment and prevention. Antiviral drugs, if started within two days of the manifestation of symptoms, succeed in reducing the severity of the symptoms, preventing further complications, and hastening cure. The most effective method of prevention is to wash hands frequently with soap or with a foam or alcohol-based gel hand wash that helps wipe away bacteria and viruses. Vaccines against the 2009 H1N1 strain outbreak are in the development stage and are expected to be ready by June 2009.
